VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) is a popular framework for plugging in third-party media in a data backup environment, and it's used in conjunction with VMware. One of the key pieces around VCB is to enable the notion of a circle of backups, that is, offloading a server from actually having to perform a backup function by leveraging snapshots, shared storage and a proxy server to actually perform the backup. But with the recent release of vSphere, many small- to midsized (SMB) storage administrators are considering migrating to vSphere for use in their data backup environment.

Greg Schulz, founder and senior analyst at StorageIO, discusses the differences between VCB and vSphere in this podcast, and answers questions such as:

  • How are people using VMware Consolidated Backup?
  • How do the backups in vSphere compare to the backups with VCB?
  • Will VMware still support it?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of backup up data in a vSphere environment?
  • What else should people look for in this vSphere release?
