Virtualization might just be taking a new turn, with prominent vendors Cisco and EMC joining hands to drive the growth of this technology. According to an announcement made yesterday, Cisco and EMC (together with VMware), introduced the Virtual Computing Environment coalition that aims to increase business agility through data center virtualization and a transition to private cloud infrastructures.

The main offering from the Virtual Computing Environment coalition has been the introduction of Vblock Infrastructure Packages. These packages are an attempt to integrate solutions from Cisco [Unified Computing System (UCS), Nexus 1000v and Multilayer Directional Switches (MDS)], EMC (Symmetrix V-Max storage) and VMware (vSphere) to provide an integrated solution.

Vblock Infrastructure Packages will be available in three variants — Vblock 0 (entry level version which supports from 300 up to 800 virtual machines), Vblock 1 (mid-sized configuration supporting 800 up to 3,000 virtual machines) and Vblock 2 (high-end configuration with support for 3,000 to 6,000 virtual machines). Vblock 1 and Vblock 2 are expected to be available this quarter from authorized systems integrators and channel partners. Vblock 0 will be available only in 2010. The Vblocks will be ISO 27001 compliant.

Vblock Infrastructure Packages can be extended by complementary systems integrators, service providers, channel partners, and ISVs. The Virtual Computing Environment coalition has announced its set of partners, which includes systems integrators, value added resellers, service providers, and independent software vendors. There are six system integrators at launch: Accenture, Capgemini, CSC, Lockheed Martin, Tata Consulting Services, and Wipro.

During yesterday's announcement, Cisco and EMC also introduced Acadia, a joint venture which focuses on accelerating customer build-outs of private cloud infrastructure through comprehensive integration of service providers and large enterprise customers.
