Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2
This can be deployed in scenarios of server consolidation, test & development, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), and mixed OS virtualization. It can support up to four processors and offer memory support of 32 GB. It offers live migration with the new Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV).
Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 does not require a client access license (CAL). According to Pallavi Kathuria, the director of server business group for Microsoft India, "When you seek licensing for Windows Server, you require the Windows CAL to justify the number of users using Windows Server environment." If the same set of users is using multiple applications on different virtual machines, there is no need to pay multiple times for the CAL license.
Windows Server 2008 R2 StandardThis can be implemented in branch server consolidation, test & development, and mixed OS virtualization. It has a local graphical user interface, ability to add additional server roles, and includes guest virtualization rights in the host server license.
Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and Datacenter edition:This is for large enterprises with a host of requirements that could be implemented in dynamic data center scenarios. One of the features here is application failover, which is not available in other versions. Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter will allow running unlimited number of virtual instances of the server software.
The Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing model consists of a server operating system license and incremental CALs. CALs will be required for all Windows Server virtualized operating systems hosted on Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.
Licensing model globally for Windows Server is not very different from that in India. Kathuria says, "Fundamentally, our businesses are transacted through partners and that is the model we follow everywhere. While several models are available, some models gain faster acceptance in some countries." Thus, in India, enterprises use enterprise agreement; managed service providers prefer service provider license agreements (SPLA). Small and medium businesses opt for the open or pay-as-you-go model.
