ESX vs. ESXi is a major decision for VMware users.

VMware ESX offers advanced features, including a service console for installing agents and running scripts. But the ESXi hypervisor has a smaller footprint, which can bring more flexibility and security.

Learn why different kinds of organizations are making the choices they're making when it comes to ESX vs. ESXi in this edition of This Week in Virtualization. The ESXi hypervisor is catching on in shops that have upgraded to vSphere, and in organizations that are new to VMware. Meanwhile, for legacy shops that rely on scripts and agents to keep their infrastructure running, ESX is still the VMware hypervisor of choice.

In addition to ESX vs. ESXi, this podcast also features news on Windows Azure. Microsoft plans to add support for virtual machines (VMs) and virtual hard disks, as well as Remote Desktop Services, to its cloud computing platform.

VM support will open the door for VM hosting in Azure. That marks a shift from the Platform as a Service model to the Infrastructure as a Service model -- and increases competition with Amazon Web Services.
